Dragon Door, Penmon Priory

The dragon door is located at the south western corner of the Priory. The dragon is carved into the tympanum (lintel). In Heraldry the beast facing behind is termed regardant and represents watchfullness. Guardian figures were often carved above doors to sacred buildings, so its fun to think that the priory is home to a dragon! The door is used traditionally for the bride to enter during a wedding, having negotiated the nettles leading up to the gate into the church yard.
